Tua Tagovailoa still hasn’t forgotten the pain of the coach’s harsh words
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa recently opened up about the coaching style of his current coach Mike McDaniel and former coach Brian Flores. In an interview Monday on The Dan Le Batard Show,Tua Tagovailoa said Flores’ coaching style was very strict.
Flores’ harsh words hurt
When Tagovailoa was asked about the differences between the two coaches, he was clear that Flores’ coaching style was quite strict and he often criticized the players.
“Simply put, if you woke up every morning and I told you, ‘You’re unworthy of what you’ve done, you shouldn’t be here, someone else should be here, you didn’t make it,’” Tua Tagovailoasaid. And then someone else (McDaniel) comes along and tells you, ‘You’re the best for this job, you’re the best, whatever. You’re this, you’re that.’ How would you feel then?”

Flores’ coaching and Tua’s confidence
Brian Flores was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins for three seasons, from 2019 to 2021. He was fired in January 2022 with a 24–25 record in three seasons. McDaniel was then hired as the new coach in February. Tua Tagovailoa arrived in the NFL in 2020 and spent his first two seasons under Flores.
Tua Tagovailoa said Flores’ coaching style influenced his confidence. “Whether it’s good or bad, if you keep hearing that you’re not good enough, eventually you’ll start to believe it yourself,” he says.
He added, “And that’s what happened. I’ve been trying to get over that negativity for the last two years. Not just me, but everyone who’s been with me since my rookie year.”
Arrival of McDaniel, New Hope
After McDaniel’s arrival, Tua regained his confidence. He said McDaniel always encouraged him and trusted him. As a result, his game has also improved.
In 2023, Tua became one of the league’s top quarterbacks with 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns. Under his leadership, Miami made the playoffs with an 11-6 record.
