CPU, GPU and NPU: Improvements in everything
According to the leaked information, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will have a 20% faster CPU, 40% faster GPU and 30% faster NPU than the previous generation. Plus, it will be 12% more power efficient, meaning it will hold a charge longer.
These improvements are likely over the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. That chip wasn’t particularly fast – it had four Cortex-A78 cores (2.4 GHz) and four A55 cores (1.95 GHz), along with an Adreno 710 GPU (940 MHz). This hardware is also seen in Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, although there it runs at lower clocks.
The 7s Gen 2’s GPU is comparable to, say, a Dimensity 7300 GPU (Mali-G615 MC2), so a 40% increase from that would make the 7s Gen 3 competitive with more powerful mid-range chips. It should be close to vanilla 7 gen 3 (adreno 720, 975 MHz) but still lag behind. However, it is not yet clear which CPU and GPU hardware will be used in the 7s Gen 3, so this is just a guess.
Gaming and AI: New experiences in mid-range phones
The main selling points of this new chipset could be generative AI and language translation/transcription. AI is very popular now and requires fast GPU and NPU. In addition, this chipset will also help convert camera raw data into color images through AI Remosaic.
This chipset will probably also be used in cheaper gaming phones thanks to the Adreno Frame Motion Engine (AFME). This creates extra frames without putting extra load on the GPU.
