Arsenal’s Spotlight: Week 2 Premier League Excitement with Merson-Sutton Predictions and Title Race Warning

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham: Who has what on their foreheads? Experts say…
The second week of play in the Premier League is about to begin. London’s three biggest teams – Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham – had mixed results last week. Arsenal opened with a win over Wolves, Tottenham drew with newcomers Leicester City, while Chelsea lost to champions Manchester City. Arsenal face strong opponents Aston Villa in week two, Tottenham face Everton at home, and Chelsea travel to the Midlands to take on Wolves.
What do the experts think about these matches?Let’s hear the expert opinions from Paul Merson and Chris Sutton on this one.
Arsenal
Aston Villa vs Arsenal
Paul Merson: “It’s a massive game. Arsenal lost the double to Aston Villa last season and lost the title as a result. If Arsenal lose and Manchester City win this weekend, the Gunners could be hurt in the title race. Mikel Arteta’s side face Tottenham Hotspur in September. And also face City, so it’s not an easy run-in from here.
Arsenal’s title hopes could face a serious blow if they don’t perform well in their upcoming matches. The next few fixtures, beginning with the Villa game on Saturday, are all challenging. Losing even two of those could significantly impact their chances of contending for the championship. This is not an exaggeration; the upcoming schedule is truly demanding for them.
There have been reports suggesting their interest in acquiring Mikel Merino, and I see the appeal. Arteta probably looked at the team and thought, ‘I can’t really play the party every week’. Arsenal will play a lot of matches this season. And with certain players coming off the back of the Euro 2024 and Copa America campaigns, it could catch them. I liked their transfer business, they recruited well.I’m predicting a victory for Arsenal in this match, however, I anticipate Aston Villa will find the back of the net at least once. Prediction: Aston Villa 1-2 Arsenal.”
Chris Sutton: Chris Sutton observed that Arsenal displayed dominance over Wolves in their previous match, while Aston Villa is coming into this game with the confidence of a significant victory against West Ham on their home turf. It smells like a draw but I’m going to say Arteta’s Arsenal will pick Aston Villa’s pocket and edge it out. Prediction: 1-2.”
Wolves v Chelsea

Paul Merson: Paul Merson expressed initial concerns about Wolves’ performance at the beginning of the season. And despite losing to Arsenal in the first game, I think they were good at certain stages of the game.

In my view, they’ll likely have a decent season. I’m quite fond of Mario Lemina’s playing style; he covers a lot of ground and has the potential to be a crucial asset for Wolves. The challenge facing Chelsea is figuring out their optimal lineup for this specific match. I can literally predict Arsenal’s XI against Tottenham next month, but I can’t do the same for Chelsea. I also don’t understand what’s going on with players like Sterling and Ben Chilwell. Sterling played a lot of pre-season and was still left out of the squad for the first match against Manchester City. In my opinion, he is still better than many wingers in their team.

I’m also not a big fan of Joao Felix. Barcelona didn’t want him, Atletico Madrid didn’t want him. Now that he’s got himself a seven-year deal at Chelsea, I think I can see why he’s happy to be back. If you don’t have a good centre-forward and a great goalkeeper, nobody wins anything big. Chelsea are buying players they really don’t need. Enzo Maresca’s men are desperate for a result. I thought they were poor against City and hardly put the gloves on the champions. I’m going for a draw here against Wolves. Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Chelsea.”
Chris Sutton: “The Chelsea team will be interesting to watch, Enzo Maresca has a big team to choose from. But Raheem Sterling will be absent, taking the number seven away from him. Chelsea also play in the Conference League on Thursday night and I thought they were well beaten by Manchester City. Ate, but it has to click for them at some stage.”Wolves had their moments against Arsenal and are everywhere in this draw. Prediction: 1-1.
Tottenham vs Everton
Paul Merson: “Tottenham’s match against Leicester City was truly a tale of two halves, the likes of which I’ve never witnessed before. Dominic Solanke needs to capitalize on the chances he’s given. I appreciate his skills, but he’s no longer with Bournemouth, and his missed opportunity won’t go unnoticed.
I was truly impressed by Tottenham’s performance in the first half of their match against Leicester. They were outstanding. However, they didn’t put the game to bed and it cost them the three points. It must have been a very disappointing result for Spurs. They have to be consistent throughout the 90 minutes. At the moment, they are only The patch plays well and needs to be changed.
“If they score the second goal against Leicester, I think it could be 4-0 or 5-0. Despite that disappointment, I’m backing Spurs to get a win even though it won’t be easy. Everton can make it difficult for them, But I can’t see Tottenham missing that many chances again. It looks like it’s going to be another long season for Sean Dyche. Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Everton.”
Chris Sutton: “Chris Sutton remarked that Tottenham Hotspur squandered numerous opportunities during the first half against Leicester City, which ultimately resulted in a disappointing draw. He noted that the feeling of a loss will linger for Spurs despite avoiding defeat. Sutton also acknowledged the high expectations for Ange Postecoglou in his second season and the significant strides the team made in the previous year.”
“Everton played well for the first 20 minutes against Brighton and are a team that will sit back and frustrate Tottenham’s life and then counter-attack. They ran Tottenham close last season but I would say Spurs at home, in front of their own fans, have to be and will be more clinical. Prediction : 3-1.”
