What is a Super Blue Moon?

At the same time full moon, blue moon and super moon – super blue moon is formed by the union of these three. Purnima is known to all of us. When the Earth, Sun and Moon are in the same straight line and the Earth is in the middle, the Moon appears fully illuminated from the Earth, this is the full moon.
But the blue moon does not mean that the moon will turn blue! It actually refers to the frequent occurrence of full moons. There are two definitions of blue moon. According to the first definition, if there are two full moons in the same month, then the second full moon is called a blue moon. Since one cycle of the moon is completed in 29.5 days, and our calendar month has 30-31 days, two full moons in one month are very rare. But it is not impossible, it happens once every two to three years. According to NASA, only 3% of total full moons are blue moons.
Another definition of blue moon is seasonal blue moon. When there are four full moons in a season (three months), the third full moon is called a blue moon. This August full moon is one such. The next seasonal blue moon will be seen in May 2027.
The magic of the super moon
Now let’s talk about Super Moon. Because the Moon’s orbit is elliptical, there are times when the Moon comes a little closer to Earth. At this time the moon looks a little bigger and brighter, this is a super moon. This August too, as the moon comes a little closer to the earth, it will appear bigger and brighter. When the Moon is closest to Earth, it appears about 14% larger and 30% brighter. This year will be the first of four supermoons in a row. Super moons are less rare than blue moons, occurring three to four times a year.
Sturgeon Moon: History of the Name
August’s full moon is sometimes called the “sturgeon moon.” There is a history behind this naming. The August full moon was referred to as the “Sturgeon Moon” by the Algonquin people, who inhabited areas surrounding the Great Lakes and what is now the Northeastern United States. Because sturgeon fish (a type of large fish) were available in abundance in the lakes during this period.
